In the CAT Examination, the minimum marks are required for each section or with good marks in any two section; can get good percentile.
Getting a good percentile is not the only key to get into good colleges. Obviously if you score 180 in cat by scoring 90 In English and 90 in Lr with 0 in Quant, youd still be the King of the Cat. But if you don't have well distributed percentiles in all the sections Most of the best Bschools would reject you.
I can understand the struggle,I used to have the same perception because when I started I was weak in LR but working over it over the time helped me to get a nice percentile in CAT.
So focus well on All Sections because one of my friend's got 99 last time but couldnt pass the IIM sectional cutoffs so didnt get a call from anyone of them.

Hello Rishabh,
In CAT Exam, there is Sectional cutoff for all the three sections which is around 70 percentile for OPEN Category and around 60 for others along with a overall cut-off of 80 percentile.

For top three IIMs, you would get call for more than 99.5 percentile only, if you are general engineer male and if you are not from engineering background you can expect a call at 98+.
So, its very challenging and your overall percentile will determine the chances of gettting a call with minm sectional cutoff 70 in all three section is mandatory to get call from IIIMs.
hope it clears your doubt.
all the best
Good marks in any 2 sections will suffice to get good percentile in Cat.
But the problem is every good Mba college will look for sectional cutoffs and won't give you calls if your sectional cutoffs are not upto the mark.
Generally try doing 20-25 questions per section with accuracy and you'd get par.
For top 3 IIMs, you would get call for more than 99.5 percentile only.
So its wiser to score big, eventually prepare well for GDPI rounds, if you have some good work experience and academics and you're an engineer then it shall be very helpful to secure your seat in final rounds.

But as you k ow that getting only above 80 percentile never gets you a call from IIM A. If you see last few years trends so accordingly we you need to have above 99.7 percentile to get a call for interview and essay writing round. And then with your performance in 2nd round along with other parameters final merit list is prepared.
This procedure consists of so many factors and is so complex that even after getting above 99.7 percentile there is no surity of getting call. One of my friebdvwhi scored 99.83 percentile in CAT 2015 doesn't got a call from IIM A and IIM B because he was not able to clear min points kept by IIM A due to other parameters so as to make you eligible and IIM B gives a lot of weightage to work experience.
So in short try to perform well in all the 3 sections because performing poor in 1 section will not only affect eligibility criteria but will also pull down your overall percentile.
So try to be consistent in all the 3 sections, a little bit up and down is fine but not to a much extend.
All the best for your preparations and exam!!
