Question : In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best express the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.


Nancy said, "I will not attend the concert now".
 

Option 1:  Nancy said that she will not attend the concert then.

Option 2: Nancy said that she would not attend the concert now.

Option 3: Nancy said that she would not attend the concert then.

Option 4: Nancy said that she should not attend the concert then.

Solution : The correct answer is option 3.

Explanation

The  sentence is written in direct speech and makes an assertive claim.
The reporting verb used here is in the past tense. Indirect form of the verb "will" becomes "would" in the Future Simple tense.

Additionally, the pronoun "I" will be changed to "she," and "now" will become "then"

Direct : Nancy said, "I will not attend the concert now".

Indirect: Nancy said that she would not attend the concert then.
