Greetings Anusha!

Hope you're doing great.

The answer is 'Yes' . A BDS graduate is eligible to give CAT examination. The beauty of CAT is that it allows any graduation across any stream to appear for this exam.

For more details on eligibility criteria: https://bschool.careers360.com/articles/cat-eligibility-criteria

As per the official notification:

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons With Disability (PWD) categories], awarded by any University or educational institution as incorporated by an Act of the Parliament or State legislature in India or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

Candidates appearing for the final year of Bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. However, it may be noted that such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally, only if they submit a certificate from the Principal/Registrar of their University/Institution (issued on or before the date as stipulated by the respective IIM) stating that they have completed all the requirements for obtaining the Bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification on the date of the issue of the certificate.

Candidates applying for CAT 2018 should fulfil any one of the following conditions:

  • Completed Bachelor’s degree with the required percentage of marks*
  • Completed professional degree (CA/CS/ICWA) with required percentage*.
  • Should be in the final year of Bachelor’s degree with required percentage*.
  • * SC/ST/PWD candidates should have a minimum of 45%. For General and NC-OBC candidates, the minimum is 50%.
  • The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate would be calculated based on the practice as followed by the respective University/Institution. In the case of grades/CGPA, the conversion to the percentage of marks would be based on the procedure as certified by the respective University/Institution. If any University/Institution confirms that there is no scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100.
  • IIMs may verify eligibility at various stages of the selection process, the details of which are provided at the website www.iimcat.ac.in. Applicants should note that the mere fulfilment of minimum eligibility criteria will not ensure consideration for shortlisting by IIMs. Candidates must declare and maintain a valid and unique email account and a phone number throughout the selection process.

Hope, you'll find this useful. Do reply in the comment section in case you want more details. Will be glad to help you out. :)

Have a great day ahead. :)

Cheers!

Hy Anusha,

Yes BDS student is eligible to write cat exams.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Students must have a bachelors degree in any stream from any recognized college or university and must have secured minimum 50% marks (45% marks in case of SC, ST and PwD candidates).
  • Candidates who have completed the degree requirements and waiting for the result or who are appearing in the final year of the qualifying exam are also eligible to apply.
  • CA/CS/ICWA professional degree holders are also eligible to apply.
Well for general category students really need to get more than 90 percentile to get a call from IIM and it also depends upon your overall profile consisting of academics, work experience, extra curricular and ofcourse you cat percentile.

I wish you all the best.

Cheers !!

Yes, definitely a BDS student is eligible, it's just that you need to clear the minimum percentage requirement in your graduation(from a UGC granted University or Institute) which happens to be 50%.

What is a bonus for you is that you are a diversity factor for the institutes which all IIMs are craving for. You fill that requirement so well. There are very few doctors and dentists who pursue MBA from IIMs and so IIMs proudly boast of their presence.

Now talking about percentile, it's true that you don't need as high as 98 percentile to get a call from IIMs however, it is advisable that it does not fall below 88 percentile for both general and OBC categories.

Students with 90+ percentile and a diversity factor have a higher chance of conversion.

To your query of whether any specific course pertaining to your field of study is taught in IIMs or not, then to this all IIMs follow a standard protocol and they provide general MBA courses like marketing management, operations management, sales, finance, HRM, etc. There is no medical-oriented management subject as such. However, all the subjects are taught in such a relevant manner that you will get to know how to apply them in your managerial field. There have been a number of operations students who are now heading big medical centres, cancer centres, etc and there are medical students who have pursued PGDM from IIMs and have not necessarily got into medical organisations.

So, MBA will open up diverse options in front of you.

Your diligent work will land you to IIM.

All the best!!
