There are lots of ways software engineers can work in the aerospace industry.

Of the top of my head I can think of these:
1.) Tool programming - the design engineers might need specialized software tools for very specific tasks that software engineers need to design
2.) Control engineering - feedback control is extremely important in modern aerospace engineering
3.) Embedded software design - Aerospace vehicles are more and more computerized. Different embedded controllers need to be networked with each other and there are several tasks in this field.
