Yes, In most of the cases a Ph.d degree is required and in some of the colleges and sometimes doctorate degree is required depends upon college requirements.
For the Assistant Professor: NET Qualified
For the Associate Professor: PG with minimum 5 yrs. Of teaching experience in the PG classes
For the Professor : 12 yrs of teaching experience in the PG classes with Ph.D in relevant subject

The following are the eligibility requirements for becoming a Professor: The candidate must have a 10+2 diploma in any subject from a recognised board. The candidate must hold a bachelor's or master's degree in any field from a recognised institution. Candidates might also pursue a PhD degree in their desired field to pursue a career in research-based institutions. If you wish to pursue this career, you must first pass the UGC NET or CSIR NET.
In the current year if you want to apply for professorship you at least need to have a masters degree alongwith NET cleared.
Though if you want to apply after 2023, you surely need a PhD degree.
