well , it is one of the eminent exams conducted for UG students of basic sciences, and inter-disciplinary areas of science and technology , helping students to pursue the basic sciences and pursue research, it aims to build foundation of knowledge , creativity and excellence. This exam started from 2004 , and it encourages and provides admission for Msc, Integ. M.sc- Ph.D etc in various areas. Organizing institute for this particular exam is IIT KHaragpur.
There are various Test subjects in JAM , which is -
- LIFE SCIENCES

- CHEMISTRY
- BIOTECHNOLOGY
Well , out of these you can take up any , based on which UG degree you have completed or yet to complete.
As far as I know, also Based on personal experiences, JAM isn't too tough. It just requires a little more of hard work and more of logical Thinking. You can definitely study by yourself , provided you compulsorily dedicate a minimum of an hour for JAM exam. This definitely helps, because when you prepare yourself on daily basis , you get the hang to solve the paper and understand the way the questions are framed and way to analyze it. IITs are one of the toughest exams, but if you have your strength in the basics, its not too hard to crack. If you get below 800 ranks , youll definitely get in one of the IITs all over India.
IIT JAM is tough , yes . But too tough ? NO. You can easily crack the exam by self study. But it depends on how you plan your study schedules and how well you understand a question. Also make sure , if you are doing self study , that you solve few previous year question papers and mock tests. You just require the proper push to study and a little bit of application level thinking, then it is easier to cack the code of IITs. IIT JAM is one of the top exams which is renown for basic science students.
I prefer you to go through self study only, You will end up having good rank and it helps you understand where you need to more focus on rather than in when you study with a masss of students. You can seek help from your lectureres if you dont quite understand any concepts or you can go online and refer concepts for better understanding. Subjects like physics require extraworkings on Logical problems and application problems. That can be solved by seeking help from your college lecturers. Also , buy books from renowned publications so that they will have model papers at the end of books and there will also be conceptual as well as analytical questions.
Self assessment is one way to know your mistakes and rectify it. hence, I suggest you to go through self study.
ALl the best and good Luck for all your upcoming exams. Feel free to revert back for any queries, well be glad to help you out.
Thank you .
