Yes, you need at least 75% in your class 12th board examination in order to be eligible for NITs if you belong to general /obccategory while if you belong to SC/ ST then it's 65% in class 12th

But yes,
To be eligible for NITs, IIITs, CFTIs one needs at least 75% marks in class 12th if belongs to General or OBC category or at least 65% marks in class 12th if belongs to Sc or St category.
For this year i. e 2021 this minimum percentage requirement of 75% - 65 % has been lifted off .
But in 2022, yes this 75-65 % criteria for NITs, IIITs, CFTIs will be there( if removed due to conditions like pandemic then nta will notify about it) .
So,
with 72% in class 12th board examination if you are from general category then you are not eligible for nits otherwise you are eligible
if you are from general category then what you can do is appear for improvement examination so that you can get more than 75% and be eligible
