Yes, it is possible to get a good rank in your first attempt in UPSC civil services examination and become an IAS officer ,it all depends upon the amount of effort you put in towards preparation, many UPSC aspirants do qualify UPSC in their first attempt and not only qualify but get into their dream services IAS/IPS etc as well , you can do the same, all you need to do is be honest and dedicated towards your studies for UPSC.
UPSC civil services examination has 3 stages listed below :-
*prelims exam :- it is objective paper and is of qualifying nature , so you just need to at least qualify it to be eligible for mains examination, the score /marks obtained by you in your prelims examination is not added up or used in your final merit. Your prelims exam consist of 2 papers: -

-) general studies II ( csat )
You get 2 hours for each paper
*Mains exam. :- it is descriptive /written examination . There are a total of 9 papers which are listed below:-

The compulsory indian language and english are qualifying in nature . You just need to qualify them. The marks obtained by you in these two papers will not be counted towards merit list.

*Make a routine or a time table and try to religiously follow it , take short breaks in between your studies.
*Read newspaper daily and keep yourself updated with the current affairs
*Choose your optional subject wisely , choose the subject you have interest in.
*Make short notes for each subject, it will help you in your revisions a lot as syllabus is wide
*Set daily goals like I have to cover these many topics today, weekly goals like I have to cover these chapters this week and practice their questions too, by the end of this week and similarly set monthly goals to cover the syllabus and meet them without any fail.
*Revise :- there's no point of preparing for the exam if you couldn't recall anything in the UPSC Examination so you should stress on revision as well.
* Your mains examination is in written, so you need to work your speed and also work on improving how to present the knowledge you have on paper, so answer writing practicing should be also your priority
*Solve previous year question papers and mock test papers ;- You should solve these , it will give you idea of types of questions asked and their difficulty level and will help you a lot.

Yes, It is possible to get high marks in the IAS exam in your first attempt.
Kanishak Kataria, Shreyans Kumat, Srushti Jayant Deshmukh have cleared the UPSC exam in 2018 with single digit ranks.

Find a time which is best suitable for you to study. Some find it better to concentrate in the morning while others find they can do better in the night.
