It was established in 1985 as the SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur, Madras University. .The SRM Institute of Science and Technology consists of six campuses, three in Tamil Nadu — Kattankulathur, Ramapuram and Vadapalani, one in NCR Delhi, one in Sikkim and one in Amravati.
