Is the job of a petroleum engineer ,a govt job or a private job for example in companies like indian oil,ONGC?
Greetings Priyanshu!
Hope you're doing great.
The job of a petroleum engineer in PSU(Public Sector Undertaking) is a government job added with perks of civil life. The engineers in PSUs are paid handsomely with a lot of facilities such as home allowances, medical facilities, Special Dearness allowance. The life of engineers in PSUs, especially in ONGC and NHAI, is not less than being an IAS officer. The matter of fact many of the PSUs jobs offers a package which is far ahead than any Grade 'A' government employees.
Coming back to your question. 'YES' engineers in PSUs are in the semi-government job and mostly on a contract basis. They are posted regularly on PAN India basis. There are many PSUs for CIVIL ENGINEERING which provide employment to the job seekers according to their area of interest and job profiles. The selection process through PSUs is through rigorous GATE examination which is conducted once every year. GATE is generally for admission into M.Tech courses however, PSU pickup bright mind student direct from these examinations.
In most of the PSUs, it is a 24-hour ongoing process i.e, people work in 8-hour shifts, 6 days a week. In most of the cases, it extends beyond 8 hours, especially for the shift in charges and those in maintenance jobs..1 breakdown and you never know how long you will be stuck, even on Sundays! For those in government jobs, a fixed timing i.e, a 9- 6 job, with, of course, leaves on Saturday and Sunday. ( Leave structure varies with PSU employees getting 15 CLs etc)
