Hello Saksham,
You must keep in mind that the biotechnology is still a developing discipline in India. And this implies that the overall job pakagpac are not only lesser in number but also less paying if we compare it to the CS and IT departments.
After a BTech degree, students can find jobs in pharmaceutical companies, research labs and institutions in India. However, most Indian students tend to go abroad to pursue their masters or doctorate studies in Biotechnology and allied fields. If you are a BSc student in biotechnology or any other biological sciences related fields, it is highly recommended that you pursue your MSc. The job opportunities for BSc graduates in a highly research oriented field as biotechnology is very less and most students tend to pursue their MSc in Biotechnology or a specialized discipline of biotechnology.
Since biotechnology is a field that involves a lot new and upcoming progress it is advisable that the candidate has at least post graduation with some specialization in the field.
Following are the primary employers in the field of Biotechnology:
- Pharmaceuticals: Biocon, IFGL Bioceramics Limited, Orbees medical, Invitrogen, Glaxosmithkline, Reliance life sciences, CTS life sciences, Dr.Reddy’s labs, Cipla, Jubilant life sciences, Wockhardt, Torrent pharma, Cadila healthcare and Ranbaxy.
- Universities and research institutions: IISc, TIFR, JNU, DU, IITs and IISERs.
- Healthcare: Cerner corporation, Unitedhealth Group
Glimpse of salary:
Those employed as researchers in government sector can have a starting salary of Rs. 9000 per month along with government perks/allowances.
Private sector pharmaceutical companies generally offer salary between Rs. 12,000- Rs. 20,000 per month to an entry-level postgraduate. A skilled and experienced bio-technologist can get salaries far beyond his expectations.
I hope this was helpful.
All the best.
Hi Saksham,
The scope for biotechnology depends upon where you study it, your calibre, interests, opportunities available at the time you pass out. There are several research and pharmaceutical institutes employing those who have passed out from biotechnology. But I would say that it being a niche area requiring quality infrastructure and research opportunities you may have to keep an eye on the government funded institiutes or a few like Tata research centres. The competition for entering such institutes in their limited seats will be high. In my opinion it is a growing field but no growing to the required extent.
Best wishes
