Well, Currently most of the food companies are run buy mechanical engineers, typical merchants etc. Due to their limited knowledge about various reaction in food like chemical, enzymatic or microbiological they are not able to keep the quality of the food. In the future, due to forced regulation by FSSAI, each and every will have to employ at least one food engineer who have complete knowledge about the food. Currently the food countries that are exporting food, are following guidelines of USFDA, FSSAI etc. so they are requiring large amount of food engineer for getting their various audits cleared or for running the production line or for Research and development purpose.I think future of food technologist will be bright. In India there are two good institutes for Btech and Mtech in food technology NIFTEM and CFTRI. Talking about Government sector, the Department of Food and Public Distribution is a well known recruiter. Within that Government agency, posts like Food Inspector, Quality Assurance Officers etc are available. State sponsored Food processing plants also are known to hire graduates. The Private sector chips in with much more opportunities. Private Food Production firms, Processing plants, Storage and Preservation firms etc are known to recruit Graduates. Firms manufacturing Food Processing equipment and machinery also recruit graduates. With current rising population, it's in demand
Plus exports need for more yielding crops. Healthy diet, plus also the growing demand for junk food among the young generation its pretty much higher than ever before. Plus food is one commodity no one can ignore, with such one so strong diverse population having various demands, I guess it's one sector which is gonna have a very big boom in coming years.
Good luck
