The Department of Chemical Engineering began as a center for excellence in research and higher education in chemical engineering to address the needs of a phenomenally growing chemical industry in post-independence India. The department has evolved significantly over the last six decades, reflecting changes in the Indian chemical industry and the chemical engineering profession worldwide.
Chemical engineering at Indian Institute of Science offers several degree programmes tailored to gain various levels training in course study and research experience. Master of Technology, M.Tech The M.Tech program is a two-year course based program designed to prepare students to address complex industrial and technological problems through an advanced knowledge of various chemical engineering subjects. A bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or a related field is necessary to enter the program. Selection is based on the score obtained in the GATE Chemical Engineering Paper. The program consists of 32 credits of course work and 32 credits of project work. Of the course credits, 21 credits are from compulsory core courses and the remaining from electives. Master of Technology Research, M.Tech (Res) The Master of Technology (Res) program is a research based program designed to prepare students for advanced chemical engineering practice through research, development, production, design and/or management. A bachelor's degree in engineering or a master's degree in sciences with mathematics as a subject at the bachelors level (at least) is required to enter the program. Each student selects a research advisor and plans a program of course work and thesis research. A minimum of 12 credit hours of graduate course work is required. Students are required to take either CH 201 or CH 202. All students are required to take CH 206. Students are required to take two of the following three core courses: CH 203, CH 204 and CH 205. Independent research work is assessed through a general test midway into the program and a final defense of the thesis. Doctor of Philosophy, PhD The Doctor of Philosophy program is designed to prepare each student to actively participate in the development and growth of the field of chemical engineering at all levels in the industry or in research and teaching in a university or a research organization. Students can enter the PhD program either with a master's or a bachelor's degree in engineering.
