Hello Sahil Minj,

What is aerospace engineering?

  • It is the construction, design and maintenance of aircrafts, missiles, spacecrafts and weapon systems. Main focuses include fuel efficiency, flight safety, environmental impact and operating costs.
  • The two fields in which you can work as an aerospace engineer are research and development, and testing and maintenance.
  • Aerospace engineers also work on finding malfunvtions in the parts and investigation of air craft crashes.
  • The course includes the study of Fluid Mechanics, Astro-dynamics, Statics and Dynamics (engineering mechanics), Mathematics, Electrotechnology, Control engineering, Aircraft structures, Materials science, Solid mechanics, Aeroelasticity, Avionics, Software, Risk and reliability, Noise control, Aeroacoustics, Flight test etc.

Top colleges for aerospace engineering are:

  • Fulton School of Engineering, Arizona State University, USA
  • Clarkson University, USA
  • California Institute of Technology, USA
  • University of Glasgow, UK
  • Cranfield University, UK
  • Loughborough University, UK
  • University of Toronto, Canada
  • Centennial College, Canada
  • The University of Sydney, Australia
  • The University of Adelaide (UoA), Australia
  • University of Sheffield, UK
  • University of Liverpool, UK

In order to apply and attain scholarships you need to appear for certain internationally recognised examinations like SAT, ACT, TOEFL iBT, IELTS, CAE and CPE.

These examinations test you in the following parameter english, mathematics, science, social sciences, humanities, listening, speaking and writing.

1. For testing English:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for countries like USA and Canada.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for countries like UK, Australia and New Zealand.
  • The Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) and The Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) for countries like UK.

2. Testing of other parameters:

  • SAT - It tests you in critical reading and comprehension, mathematics and Writing.
  • ACT - It tests you in english, mathematics, reading comprehension, grammar, science with an optional writing section.

Other information for applying:

  • Along with them you might have to give SAT Subject Test if asked by the colleges you are applying to. Theses will test your high school level knowledge on subjects whose exams you appear for.
  • In UK you will have to apply through UCAS.
  • Certain educational courses in public universities of countries like Germany, France and Norway do not charge tution fees.
