Hello,

.

A POLITICAL-SCIENCE MAJOR PREPARES YOU TO DO ALMOST ANYTHING!Bachelor or Masters

The Masters degree however, probably only makes sense for the most competitive of the competitive from top polo-sci schools, with top grades, good extra-curricular experience, and very specific ideas about who they want to work for;those who can afford the educational cost and are also passionate about working within the established systems of dominant players:Consultantslike McKinsey,Law firmslike Cravath (yes several states allow non-JDs to read law and take the bar exam without a law degree),Government Agencieslike the NSA, CIA, or the State Department,Think Tanks(public policy institutes and researchers) like the Heritage Foundation or the Foreign Policy Institute,Bankerslike Goldman Sachs (especially if you have an extremely strong math background),Grantwriting companieslike Forward Thinking Group or Faith Based Funding,Lobbyistorganizations like the AARP, NRA, or US Chamber of Commerce Etc And of course you can always run for somePublic Office, orPolitical Action Committees, or interview with almost anytop large cap companylooking to groom managers are fair game too - - the usual suspects at college job fairs (ie., Marketing, Advertising, Communications, Sales Business); 23Red, Proctor & Gamble, Leo Burnett, Time Warner, General Motors, etc. You can eventually make a lot of money and wage considerable influence working for most of these large, smart, competitive, dominant, often growing and progressive companies. But all this is obvious and doesn't apply to 98% of all political-sci majors

Bachelor or Masters degree, you, as part of the 98%, need to learnhow to sell yourselfandcreate your own opportunities, like any strong campaigner or visionary. Success will not be tied to your academic record or major - - showing will usually be far more powerful than telling.

Your major and degree - - the study of power/control, history, economics, philosophy and social justice - - should also teach you how to get what you want out of life. It should teach you how to ask better questions, and how to educate yourself, and then how to take actions towards helping others (Salesmanship).

While a Business Major ideally prepares you to succeed in ownership - - starting, managing, growing, investing, etc in a business,Political Science generally helps prepare you to become part of the larger framework in which businesses operate(regulatory, tax, legal, environmental, military, business and community support, etc). Thus Political Science can really prepare you for success in both spheres, business and government/legal, whereas the reverse is not as true.

While still a Poli-Sci student, get real-world experiencevia government internships (go to school in capital or large cities like Madison or New York City), volunteer work with non-profits, govt-sponsored university research projects, employment as researcher for private policy study firms, lobbyists, grant-writers, join a school or local newspaper staff, or even simply run for student government (form a political action committee by organizing the dorms or the Greeks to take over the school government - - throw great parties; merchandise the hell out of them, start small businesses - - a tutoring service, speaker/film series, concerts, etc - - get publicity - - clippings become resume). Make sure your thesis is primarily experience based rather than solely study-based. The more extra-curricular experience the more opportunities and luck

Let the momentum and passion of your REAL-WORLD COLLEGE EXPERIENCES carry over into your career choices.Don't make the mistake of over focussing on GPA or even getting a Masters; a year into your career nobody will ever ask you for it again - - actual performance is what counts most in life and careers.

Lastly: Almost nobody ever really knows what they want to do with their life after college. If you don't know WHAT you should try, don't forget to consider WHO you should try.Sometimes the opportunity to work with a great (please define: growing, dynamic, innovative, cutting edge, big, startup, righteous, great training culture, etc) company or organization will get you farther than becoming a certain function. EX: Rather than going to law school to become a lawyer, it might be far more rewarding and less expensive to work in a factory which is growing and progressive and will train you to advance into all kinds of interesting areas OR a start-up think tank or consultancy (outside the established majors who demand Masters degrees from top schools and top grades) If youre not having luck starting big (running for Senate), then start small and local (city council). If for profit career turns you off, try non-profit. If CIA or State Department or Military doesnt work out, then teach English in Korea or China Become fluent in a foreign language and then circle back later.
