Yes, the University is UGC Approved. The University Act, passed by the Gujarat State Legislative Assembly in 1965, was used to create Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU), Surat. The university began operating in the 1966–1967 academic year and was officially established as a university in 1967. The University Grants Commission granted VNSGU recognition in 1968, and in 2004 it was renamed Veer Narmad South Gujarat University in honour of the legendary Gujarati poet Narmadshankar Lalshankar Dave.
