Dear Aspirant,
Both the fields have their respective pros and cons. When one aims to become a fashion designer, they usually undergo formal training in the form of a degree, a diploma or a certification. Just like any other course, they learn the art through a structured syllabus. The incentive of being a fashion designer is that you are strong on your research and education. After securing your education, you may be given placements in T.V and Film production Units, apparel manufacturing firms or fashion retailers. You may also choose to start your own business and become an Entrepreneur.
Now, people who are very creative and like to add variety in their life can find their passion in styling. A fashion stylist does not necessarily need to have complete formal education in the field. All it takes is the skill and passion. All modern days celebrities have stylists around them that make them look great on their big days. However, the struggle may be a little more as they compete with a wider section of aspirants. A Fashion Stylist also needs to be very well aware of the trends.
So, if you are interested in learning the concepts and techniques and would like to invent your own garments, it is advisable for you to do fashion designing from a reputed institute like NIFT. If you are interested in studying other designers clothes and compiling the best out of the lot into a wonderful combination, you will make a great stylist.
If you want to be in the fashion industry through other ways, you may resort to options like Fashion Journalism, Fashion Blogging, Social Media Marketing, Retail Stores Manager or even work as a model if you are confident in your own skin.
Hope this helps.
