As far as your Institute is a Tier 1 College like IITs, NITs or Top State Engineering Colleges, both Metallurgical and Mechanical Engineering have good career scope and prospects.

However, Mechanical Engineering has an edge over Metallurgy, in the Public Sector. Nearly all the 50+ PSUs as well as most Public Research Organizations have openings for Mechanical Engineering, through GATE. You may even enter Indian Engineering Services Cadre through UPSC ESE Exam with Mechanical Engineering, but not for Metallurgy. Whereas for Metallurgy, you hardly have a couple of PSUs like SAIL, Nalco and a few others like IOCL and ISRO, DRDO, NML, BARC in the Research Sector.

Hence, ideally if you were comfortable with Physics, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Calculus during your JEE/Engineering Preparation, you may prefer Mechanical over Metallurgical Engineering.

hi,

see there is various engineering streams offers in bachelors level which is 4 years of  duration course. however while you chose for an engineering degree you have to consider the placement, college infrastructure, demanding of the career in that particular stream also. however if you get tier 1 nits or iits for metallurgical engineering, then I would suggest to go for it. however if your ranks allows you to only for private college or state government college then it would be best to chose mechanical engineering. in terms of jobs prospect in india, mechanical would be superior then metallurgical engineering.
