JEE Mains is a National level exam and can be given by any student from any state. Through JEE Mains Rank you can get admission into most of the colleges in India as it is Nation wide exam conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA).
On the other hand, MHT CET is conducted by Maharashtra State to give admission into Colleges in Maharashtra. You can give both the exams but JEE Mains has more value because you can get NITs or IIITs based on the JEE Mains Rank.
If you want to join in NITs or IIITs or any Private Engineering College which accepts JEE Mains rank belonging to any state then you should write JEE Mains and get good score. Through MHT CET you can only get seat in colleges in Maharashtra only. It is better to write both the exams and which ever exam's score is good using that you can get seat in the college.
