Here are few of the tips and some books that you should prefer :

For Classical Political Philosophy - Sushila Ramaswamy, C.L.Wayper.
For Indian Political thought - Thomas Pantham or B.R.Mehta.
For Indian Politics - Oxford Companion to Indian Politics , Bidyut Chakravarty and Rajendra Pandey on indian government and politics.
Follow current affairs thoroughly .
