Electronics and communication engineering is a core branch and has some good job opportunities in both private and government sector. There are many PSU's which take electronics engineering students through gate exam. Some of top are BSNL, BHEL,etc.

You can also become and IES officer by applying for Engineering services exam and get job with privilages like IAS officer. You can get into railways and other firms and PSU's.

There are many job opportunities in government sector for ECE student. ECE students have the option to join engineering services by qualifying IES exam. You can also try for a job in PSU like CONCOR, IOCL or  in GAIL.In banks you have the option to join as Specialist Officer. In defense you can join as Officer by qualifying CDS exam . A ECE student  can join railway as assistant signal& telecommunication engineer through UPSC civil services exam. the promotion channel is divisional signal and telecommunication engineer then Sr. divisional signal and telecommunication engineer at divisional level.
