Hello Ritesh,

Journalism and law both the fields have their own relevance. If you chose to study law then it will take 5years to complete. After that you can practice your lawer skills further . But if you chose to study journalism then it will take 3 years all in all (BA in journalism and mass communication) sometimes the course of B.tech in tv production and media technology takes 4years. Earning of a lawyer is almost similar to a well established journalist,  there is no much difference. If you ask me, from my personal view,  I would suggest you to study journalism because the scope is vast for this sector. You can get a chance in media industry, production, advertising and so on.

You can consult with your teachers or elders. Search on the internet for both the streams. Think before you chose your area of study then only make the right decision.

All the best!

Hi Ritesh

There are a lot of similarities between the two fields.

While a law degree can give you a new direction, I am unconvinced that it would boost your journalism career. The law school grads I know who are successful journalists never really stopped their journalism careers. Most worked and attended law school at the same time. That is tough to do and is an example of how good they are at juggling.

As you consider your options, don't compare your position today with where you figure you would be after 4 years of law school. Compare where you'd be after 4 years of law school with where you think you'd be after three more years of journalism.

So think about it

All the best

Hi Ritesh.

Both the fields that you have mentioned are completely different from each other. The only common thing would be that both the careera would require good communication skills, research skills and confidence. The careers prospects after a degree in Journalism is Editor as a Cartoonist, Photo Journalist  Proof Reader, Feature Writer, Leader Writer, Correspondent/Special Reporter, Critic, Presenters, Researchers, Reporter, Broadcast Reporters, Columnist. The careers prospects after a law degree would include Practicing as a lawyer in courts and tribunals, Judiciary, Law firms and MNCs as a legal advisor, leal researcher, associate etc, Teaching, you also have a scope in various Internationals organisations like UN etc.

Your basis of selection between the two must be your area of interest and not just the prospective salary as you might earn better in a particular field if you have the ability to excel in it.

If you compare the salaries, a corporate lawyer earns an average of 600,000 per annum and a journalist earns around 300,000 per annum So you can say a lawyer  has chances of a more lucrative salary if compared. The figures are just for comparing purposes. Some lawyers may earn 6,00,000 per case some may earn 60,000 per case and some may earn 600,000 in a month. This variation will totally depend on your abilities and strengths. So you should choose the one that it better fitted for you according to your capabilities.

Best of luck!
