These are the ways to pursue CSE branch even when in the Mechanical Engineering domain:
- After 1st year, in some colleges, an option is available to upgrade your branches and this upgradation is based on the factors of merit list of pointer of first year, vacancies in the branches, etc. So this may be an opportunity for branch change and upgradation from Mechanical Engineering to CSE. For this, keep your grades high and be evident on the merit lists
- Next, if the above option isn't possible, self learning is the best viable option. You can always study all the concepts of CSE such as DSA, programming, etc; and then go for on campus and off campus IT placements which will help you pivot your career in CS
- The next viable option is to self learn all the concepts of CSE and then apply for Masters in the CSE domain in various colleges which would help further in the next placements

If you want to switch to computer science after your graduation you can do it in two ways:
1. Prepare for computer science subjects like learning a programming language, data structures and algorithms, software testing and development, operating system, database management, etc, along with studying for your own course i.e. mechanical engineering. You can directly apply in IT companies on campus or off campus and try for jobs.
2. If you wish to pursue post graduation in computer science then also you will have to prepare Computer Science subjects and attempt entrance exams like GATE. There is no restriction if you belonged to mechanical engineering, you have option of switching in mtech.
