Dear aspirant,

I hope you are safe and healthy.

A Hotel Manager is responsible for supervising and controlling the operations of hotels and motels.

  • Hotel Managers will typically have several years relevant experience in addition to a qualification in hospitality. A combination of a formal qualification together with on-the-job training is usually required to become a Hotel Manager.
  • Set, manage and maintain budgets and financial plans in order to achieve sales and profit targets.
  • Employ, train and liaise with staff in order to address and deal with customer complaints, and to ensure events and conventions run smoothly.
  • Hotel Managers are responsible for the day-to-day operations of a hotel and its staff. This means they are often in charge of the financial management of hotel services.
  • Hotel Managers must have excellent customer service and problem solving skills. It is common for hotel managers to work in the evenings, on weekends and on public holidays.

Basic Steps to be followed are as follows:

  • Get an associate’s degree in business for the basics of how to manage others.
  • Pursue a bachelor’s degree in hospitality if you want a career-oriented program.
  • Consider getting your master’s degree if you want to work at upscale hotels.
  • Seek apprenticeships at a hotel to get all-around experience.
  • Apply for a lower level position if it’s available.
  • Go above and beyond guest expectations if you can.
  • Take certification classes to advance your career towards management.

  1. Ensure you have experience in addition to a qualification in hospitality management. This may be a Diploma of Hospitality Management (SIT50416) or an Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management (SIT60316).
  2. Work your way up to become a Hotel Manager. Employers generally view a degree-level qualification in management, such as a Bachelor of Business (Hotel Management) or a Bachelor of Hospitality Management very favorably.
  3. Hotel Managers with experience can move up to become an operations director or guest services director.

I hope it helps.

All the Best!
