Agriculture courses: Admissions to be based on entrancetests

IN A first, those seeking admission to agriculture and allied courses will have to take entrance tests. The Maharashtra Council of Agricultural Education and Research (MCAER) has decided to conduct admissions for the year 2018-19 on the basis of state and central entrance exams. Earlier, admissions were conducted based on Class XII marks, but this year, the MCAER will also ask for scores of the Maharashtra Technical Common Entrance Test (MHT CET), the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) or the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). We have assigned 70 per cent weightage to entrance exam scores and the remaining 30 to the candidate's Class XII marks," said Harihar Kausaidar, the MCAER director. This means that a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering, horticulture, forestry, biotechnology, home or community science, food technology, sericulture, food nutrition and dietetics and agriculture will be treated on a par with other professional courses, such as engineering and medicine. Non-technical courses: Varsities to offer diploma, degree coursesonline

A new set of regulations, set to be introduced next month, will permit universities to offer diploma and degree courses in non-technical subjects online, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Tuesday. According to ministry sources, the new regulations are part of the government's attempt to achieve its Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) target of 30 per cent by 2022. When questioned about concerns over quality of such courses and student evaluation, Javadekar told reporters that the ministry was not looking to replace brick-and-mortar education and that only educational institutions with either a grade of A+ and A++ awarded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council or a score of 3.26 and above will be permitted to offer online courses. As for student evaluation, the minister added that the method of conducting examinations will be on the lines of GMAT.
