Hello Selbin,

M.Com and MBA are two different fields completely. Generally, students start their M.COM just after their undergrad is completed by giving an entrance exam of differnt university or colleges. M.COM is a stream which helps you specialise in the Commerce field where you won't just read about accounting but also the corporate law and different subject which are complementary to finance , marketing, HR etc. The kind of job that M.Com provides with are mainly in the managerial level of the B.Com students working above you. But the quality of placement from any college providing you the M.Com degree wont be that good as compared to MBA. Though getting into the top B School is tough but if you get into that then it brightens your future with more opportunities.

MBA is the wholesome of diverse fields all together where you can specialise in any field of your wish. To do MBA you are required to give an entrance exams like CAT, MAT, XAT, IIFT, GMAT etc. After getting your result, you are asked for the interview and the written assessment or group discussion which take place before the interview but depends on the college preference. But to do M.Com you are not judged based on your 10th and 12th STD marks but for MBA your selection depends on your grades in 10th and 12th std. In MBA you will be reading different kinds of subjects like FINANCE, MARKETING, OPERATIONS, STRATEGY, HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, PRODUCT MANAGEMENT, ANALYTICS, etc. which gives you freedom to choose unlike M.Com which dose not provide with the proper one specialization. Many M.COM students opt for MBA after completing their post graduate to work in investment banks.

MBA after M.COM is also an option available if you are very keen in doing your post graduate in the field of M.COM but is also looking forward in getting an MBA degree from a renowned college. I must assure you that doing M.COM will add value to your MBA and make your overall MBA experience enriching which is far better than entering the B School just after doing graduation.

It depends on many factors:

What you want to do : after mcom . See plain mcom won't give you much value unless you want to study further. You can opt for PhD I you want to enter into teaching field. Or want to pursue CA or any other professional courses.

But if your sole confusion is between only mcom and MBA I will suggest you to go for MBA. But even in MBA, you have to face fierce competition.

It also depends on your financial conditions. Since , MBA from good colleges has fees of at least 6–7 lacks (full-time ) And if you get into IIM then your life is set.

Part time MBA hardly have any value. Even in full-time you have to get into A grade colleges for good placements. Otherwise there are MBAs' in every corner of the street. So, if you have plan to study for more years and you have patience opt for mcom + any specialization /professional courses or simply work hard and putall your heart and soul for 6–8 months score good in entrance exam and get in to a good college. Study Two years and get an MBA degree.

I hope this answer will help you in some way to decide.

All the best :)

Hi Selbin!

Doing an MBA :

  • Its a general degree where you can get a chance to learn and be specialized in many streams like Finance , Marketing , Operations etc.
  • Enables the candidate to apply for Managerial Positions in organizations.
  • Learning can cover a broader range of subjects .
  • It can be costly compare to MCom.
  • Having prior Work experience leads to better edge in placements

Doing a MCom:

  • Its a degree that is specific to certain areas of interest of Finance such as Accounts, etc .
  • Might not enable candidate to apply for managerial positions in organizations hence growth can be relatively slow.
  • Learning is restricted to fewer Finance based concepts only.
  • Can be quite less expensive compared to MBA.
  • Prior work experience is not necessary .

Finally, it also matters upon the institute you choose to do your MBA/MCom as that can have a lot of influence in terms of your placements, packages , preferred job positions and so on.

All the best !

Hi Selbin,

MBA is a professional degree as compared to M Com which an academic discipline. The choice entirely depends on what you plan to do in future. If you wish to attain a job at the earliest, then MBA should be the choice. However, if you are itnerested in learning about the nuances of the discipline, then M.Com will provide you with an in-depth insight. It also depends on what you are interested to and inclined towards. MBA is generally for those interested in Management and M.Com is a commerce grounded discipline.
