Hello Neha , The Royal College has been conducting its overseas post-graduate course, preparing trainees to take the final component of the FRCS which is now called Membership of Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) examination.

MRCS diploma is Membership of Royal College of Surgeons of all Royal College of Surgeons in England -The Royal College of Surgeons of England, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow. To pass MRCS (now three parts), you must have worked in four different specialities for at least six months. Prior to 2004, you need to work for minimum of one year in Surgery and six months in either Orthopaedics or A&E or Trauma. Out of these A&E should be from UK. To do A&E, you must pass PLAB and get GMC Registration.

The new Intercollegiate MRCS has three papers:

Part 1: Applied Basic Science

Part 2: Clinical Problem solving

and Part 3: Viva and Clinical. British Council Kolkata hosts all the three parts of the exam.

Eligibility for MRCS Part 1: Candidates are required to have MBBS qualification including (including internship) from a WHO recognised college.

Part 2: in addition to the above qualification they will need to have commenced BST (Basic Surgical Training)

Part 3: candidates are required to complete 2 years of Basic Surgical Training and also Basic Surgical Skills Course.

MRCS was a first step to undertake four more years of higher surgical training in the U.K. On completion, a certificate of completion of surgical training (CCST) is issued. Thus after six years of training in the U.K., one could appear for the FRCS examination. Only after this could one become a consultant surgeon.

Best of luck
