The Representation of the People Act,(1951) gave the Indian President the authority to shorten the terms of members elected to the first Rajya Sabha. As a result, the Parliament stipulated in the Representation of the People Act (1951) that a Rajya Sabha member's term of office shall be six years. As of 2017, A person must reach the age of 30 by Article 84 of the Indian Constitution to be elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
