The equation to be used while solving this type of series is (n x 3) + 2. where n is the previous digit.
For example, in the above series we have to find the digit after 53, so by using this formula (n x 3) + 2 we get (53 x 3) + 2 = 161.
so the series will be 1,5,17,53,161.
Similarly if you find the next digits you can use the equation. The next digit will be (161 x 3) + 2 = 485.
So the series is 1,5,17,53,161,485 and so on....

In this series the previous number is multiple by 3 and then 2 is added to for the next number
1 multiplied by 3 is 3 and add two becomes 5
5 multiplied by 3 is 15 and add2 becomes 17
17 times 3 is 51 and add 2 and it becomes 53
therefore 53 times 3 is 159 and add 2 it becomes 161
