Dear Vikash, now IIMS have been giving sectional weightage and have been calculating CAT composite score. IIMs like Allahabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore and Lucknow give importance to Quantitative Ability while Institutes like FMS give importance to Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension. FMS gives 40% weightage to this section.

In Verbal Ability session, command on your English, Grammar, Vocabulary, Understanding of the given paragraph are of more importance. Reading English NewsPaper will also help you in your preparation.

Preparation tips:

Read articles from time to time. Follow newspapers, magazines, and watch the news channels and browse the internet to keep yourself updated. You will need a lot of reading to help you in the comprehension section. You will need speed to help you in this section and you can achieve that only by thorough practise and reading. Take time to understand the question because most answers are interlinked.

Best books:

  • Verbal Ability by Arun Sharma and Meenakshi Upadhyay
  • Wiley English
  • Vocabulary Wheels
  • Verbal by Sujit Kumar
  • 40 Reading Comprehension Passages by PT Education
  • A Student introduction to English Grammar by Rodney Huddleston and Geoffre K.Pullum

Hello,

English is one of the 5 main parts of the CAT exam. The section name is Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension. The main point in CAT English is that you don't need a very strong vocabulary, because no direct vocabulary based questions are asked.

The main things you can do are read as much as possible. Try to write summary of what you read. Go for editorial from newspapers like The Hindu, Indian Express. Apart from this you can also use books like word power made easy and VA&RC by Arun Sharma.
