my gate score is 12.67 out of 100.i am a EE branch student.how to convert my gate score out of 1000?and rank?
See, anyone can explain the methodology but you cant just convert the marks into score as you need data like the number of applicants to start of with and then thats for 23 disciplines. Second, you havent qualified if I see the marks then you must know that they dont award ranks for marks less than the qualifying cutoff.
Let I try to explain about this with logical arguments.
- GATE exam conducted in different slots if total number of appearing students can’t manage in single slot. CE, ME, CS, EC, EE papers are conducted in two or three number of slots.
- The difficulty level of each slots are different. For that they have to normalize marks in order to consider all students at equal platform.
- Normalized marks are calculated by this formulaHere, meaning of this formula is explained in following terms.
- subtract mean + standard deviation of their respective slot to marks obtained by individual . (Mij - Miq)
- subtract mean + standard deviation of their respective slot to average marks obtained by top 0.1% of candidate in that session . (Mti - Miq)
- subtract mean + standard deviation (considering all slots together) to average marks obtained by top 0.1% of candidate of all sessions . (Mtg - Mqg)
By linear variation, marks to be converted in to normalized (as showed first term in image) and add mean + standard deviation (considering all slots together), which we had subtracted earlier.
Now, we are here with normalized marks of all 23 streams.
Formula for calculating GATE Score is presented here.
- Minimum GATE score of qualifying candidate is 350.
- Anybody having GATE Score more than 900 is considered in top 0.1% of all sessions.
- 2nd part of formula shows linear variation of mark to GATE score.

Some statistical data is given below.
- Many papers contains total number of candidates less than 8,000 to 10,000. In that case top 0.1% students are top 8 to 10 students. for that reason, Mt is calculated by top 0.1% or top 10, which ever is larger.
- If someone told you that I got AIR 25 in XX paper. Don’t surprise !! Ask about their GATE score.
