You have not mentioned your category. It is important to know the category as the cut off will be different for each category. Nevertheless, assuming that you belong to general category it is difficult to get seat easily in IITs. You need to score minimum 750 or above. if we go through previous trends, the cutoff for IIT's stand over 600 (Gate Score) for Mechanical Engineering. Since your marks is in (500-550) , you can try for admission in NIT's.
