my percentage is 58 in class 12 with PCM, can I join merchant navy

Hope you are doing well.

As per your query, you are eligible to join Merchant navy with 58% in Class 12th.

Following are the steps one has to follow in order to join Merchant Navy:

Step 1: Clear 10+2

Students are required to complete 10+2 in physics, chemistry, maths with an aggregate of 50 per cent of marks or equivalent to it from a recognised board.

Step 2: Entrance exams

Several colleges conduct entrance exams before taking student admission. In order to be eligible to sit for the entrance exam, students must complete their 10+2 with a minimum of 50 per cent marks. There are other colleges and universities which provide admission on the basis of the cut-off of 12th passing percentage.

Entrance exams like-

  • JEE MAINS
  • JEE ADVANCE
  • IMU-CET (INDIAN MARITIME UNIVERSITY COMMON ENTRANCE EXAM)
  • HIMT-OET (HINDUSTAN INSTITUTE OF MARITIME ONLINE ENTRANCE TEST)
  • TMI-BITS-EE (TOLANI MARITIME INSTITUTE- BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION)

Step 3:Undergraduate

In order to pursue a career as a merchant navy one needs to opt for a bachelor’s degree programme in related specialisation. Here are some popular bachelor’s degree programmes that will provide students an understanding of how to become a merchant navy officer.:

B.Tech/B.E Courses-

  • Offshore Engineering
  • Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
  • Marine Engineering
  • Naval Engineering

Step 4: Post Bachelor

Once the bachelor's degree is completed the student has two options:

Option 1 : He or she can begin working in the field of merchant navy at an entry-level post.

Option 2 : The candidate can go for his or her master’s degree programme in the specializations related to merchant navy.

Hey there

Sorry to say but the candidate must have completed his 10 + 2 with at least 60% marks in the aggregate. The candidate must have also completed 50% marks in English subject. The candidate must have been unmarried at the time of joining. The candidate must have studied science subjects at the time of 12th class.
