my self krishna I'm form Andhra. Can anyone please guide me to become a weapon engineer after completion of my bachelors in chemical engineering
Hello T.Krishna Sai.
This was a unique question. I never came across any undergraduate student who want to pursue the field of weapon engineering. I'll tell you what things might help you to achieve this goal.
In India, We have two different departments under the Ministry of defence to deal with weapons.
DRDO - Defence Research and Development Organization.
DDP - Department of Defence Production.
DRDO is a design agency for designing and development of weapons. The recruitment for this organization is done through GATE exam and after clearing this exam you will be designated as Scientist and you will deal with design of different weapons like Artillery guns, rifles, machine guns, armored combat vehicles, howitzers, missiles, torpedoes etc. You might have heard about the KALI weapon? Same as that.
Under DDP we have Ordnance Factories which is directly under the department and defence PSUs like BEL, BDL, BEML, HAL etc. In DDP the main mandate is to manufacture the weapons rather than design ..so the factories under DDP involve in the bulk production of weapons and supply to Indian armed forces.
Recruitment for officers in Ordnance Factories is done through UPSC ESE and the engineers in the defence PSUs are recruited through GATE Exam.
If you want to be hardcore weapon designer and if you have aptitude to design weapons , go and join in DRDO.
Now listen, Courses categorized under Weapons Engineering:
- PG in Air Armament Engineering
- PG in Combat Vehicles Engineering
- PG in Guidance and Navigation Control Engineering
- PG in Guided Missiles Engineering
- PG in Microwave and Radar Engineering
Career possibilities in the field of weapons engineering
Since weapons are not the business of common people and their research, development, maintenance and repair are highly regulated, you can find a job in weapons engineering in the military alone. However, as more and more sophisticated weapons of warfare are being developed and the defense system has begun to rely more on machines than on individual prowess, the scope of employment for the weapons engineer have increased, though they still must remain confined to the military. As a weapons engineer, you can work in research and development of new weapons. You might someday start your own STARK INDUSTRIES like TONY STARK had in IRONMAN (2008).
Approximate salary to be expected at the entry level
Since it is a highly specialized field, you can expect very good salary even at the entry level. In addition, since the employment is necessarily in the military, you enjoy a number of perks and benefits as well.
