This is percentile score,it indicates relative performance of all those who appear for the examination. Basically the marks obtained are transformed into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session of examinees.
38 percentile means 38% examinees score equal to or less than your's son score in that session.You have to wait till NTA declares raw score of every candidate.
Percentile method is adopted as level of ever paper is not same.

You cannot check your subject wise marks as of yet. NTA has released percentiles scored in JEE Mains today. These are the Normalised scores and not the raw scores. The percentiles are based on the relative performance of all those candidates which is calculated by transforming the scores into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 .
The total scores as well as the scores for each of the three subjects- Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry will be released on 31st January for the January session of JEE Mains. Right now only the Percentile scores have been released.
