First of all let me congratulate your son for expecting 90% in 12th.

As you said , your son is expecting 98 marks in JEE mains his rank will be surely above 2Lakh because there is no role of 12th percentage in Main's rank.

Accordingly there are no of private colleges and state colleges in which you can apply through your JEE score

Now , from branch point of view, each and every branch of engineering have its own benefits  and disbenefits. It's totally depend upon the student in which sector he want to go for it.

So leave this decision under your son such that afterwards he never regrets. Ask him to select whatever branch but it should be match with the work which he is going to do after 4 years of degree.
