Hi Mohit,

Here is the list of available specializations for Mechanical engineering in M.Tech run by IITs, NITs and state level institutions:

  • Manufacturing Systems Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering.
  • Mechanical Handling and Automation
  • Pollution and Noise Control.
  • Computer-Aided Design.
  • Mechanical Systems Design
  • Computer Aided Manufacturing.
  • Combustion and Propulsion
  • Heat Transfer and Thermal Power
  • Thermal Energy and Environmental Engineering
  • I.C. Engines and Gas Turbines
  • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
  • Engine Technology
  • Automobile Designing
  • Production Engineering
  • Combustion Technology
  • Applied Mechanics
  • Engineering Analysis and Design
  • Industrial Automation and Robotics
  • Manufacturing and Precision Engineering
  • Mechanical System Design
  • Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning
  • Thermal Turbomachines
  • Turbo Machines
  • CAD/CAM
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Machine Design
  • Mechanical System Design and Dynamics
  • Mechatronics
  • Thermal Power Engineering
  • Tool Engineering

Confused by so many options, Let's talk some popular ones-

  1. It's better to go for Industrial engineering because it's the best option if you want to pursue a career in the industry. NITIE like colleges are highly sought after. But there is also a downside of this branch. Not all colleges can fetch good company for campus placement. It's better to look at the prospects of college, their placement record of the particular branch before choosing any branch. But yes, this branch is not so much prosperous for PhD. But these days students who don't land up in a job, they are going for PhD in IIMs after doing m.tech.
  2. Design engineering, this is actually taken by most of the students recently and highly sought after. If u have genuine design interest and skill, then go for it. Otherwise, it will be quite difficult to sail through. I have seen people who don't have any interest in design but take this branch based on popularity. In, Automotive industry it is highly sought after, but still, its reach in industry level is limited. If u don't even land up in a job also, still you can very well rely upon your Research interest and pursue your PhD.
  3. Manufacturing engineering, which actually a good balance between PhD scopes as well as industry scope. In industry level, definitely, its scope is much wider than Design engineering. Research scopes are also quite better than other mechanical branches.
  4. Branches like Robotics, CAD- CAM can land up you in a high package of 11- 12 lpa or nothing.

In M.tech, to get campus placement is quite difficult in a good company. In IITs, authorities are more bothered about B.tech placement. It's assumed in some IITs that m.tech is the ladder to PhD, so they don't even show interest or take any initiatives regarding proper placement of M.tech.

And after all the selection of any specialization should be based on your sole interest, which mechanical subject you like the most.

Don't choose anything by the advice of others, try to find your own liking and work on it for more times…it will pave the way to greatness at someday.

I Hope this information helped you.

All the best.
