Now I completed my first year in engineering so how to start preparing for GATE exam?? Should I join any coaching classes
Vaishnavi, I will tell you what all you can do from your second year.
Concentrate on your subjects and try to solve the questions that appeared in previous year papers of your current semester subjects of GATE syllabus. This will give you an idea of how deep you have to prepare for each subject for the exam.
Later after third year, you can purchase any test series of coaching institutes and keep solving them to test your preparation. Whichever topic you find difficult, revise it again and continue solving.
If you are able to follow the above steps properly, then you don't need to join any coaching classes, But in case you face difficulty in doing all this without supervision, then feel free to join some class.

Hope this helps!
All the best!
it is really wonderful that you are thinking about gate exam from the first year of studying. see you don't need to have all subjects from your four year course of engineering in gate exam. the most important subjects are included in gate syllabus which are taught in 2nd to 3rd year of engineering. so first of all try to practice a lot of numerical questions and make your basics clear. on the last semester of 2nd year you may join coaching center.
but 70% of self study you need to do yourself. and give lots of test series.
