Hello Devansh Garg,

Firstly , Let me get a few things straight out of the way : -

This year’s papers were FAR more easier than 2018 paper . So those who are comparing your marks v/s ranks on previous year data and the stupid rank predictors . And the data that you usually see on the net of the previous years are usually just copy-pasted year after year without any actual analysis .

Here are ranks of some people whom i know :-

I'm getting somewhere around 280 in 10 Jan shift 2 and i got Rank 1352.

Two guys getting about 300 in the toughest / lengthiest shift got rank 700 - 750.(One in Jan and the other in April)

Another person getting about 310 in April Got rank somewhere around 950 .

My friend got 175 he is got 23K rank .

I have other examples too .

Second point is about 2017 paper - Some are saying it was the easiest in the last years . So why the marks vs ranks are not matching with the data there ? Answer is it is still not easier than 2019 papers (Excluding a few). This year the chemistry was entirely from NCERT and maths , physics was straight forward .

Now I do agree this system has a flaw in it . It is the variable difficulty of papers of all the shift . People are just not able to understand the percentile mechanism. Because of two Attempts the rank increase by a huge margin as people improve in second paper . The ranks of a person would be 1.38 times the rank he would have got if there was only one attempt . (Considering it there best attempt).

I would just end my answer here because most likely people are not ready to accept the reality even if I present more points . And i am not supporting NTA even i would have got a far better rank if i had given a normal paper , single attempt , same for all , no percentile system . But they didn't mess up as bad as others are portraying it.

EDIt:-

I don't know much about stats but I think that the curve will be a bit similar , i know that JEE is given by way more people than this exam but the percentiles are independent of the no of people ( except the lowest percentile).

Correct me if i am wrong but here is what i found .

Ok so i found a curve for percentile vs marks . Not for Jee mains but for another exam called the GAMSAT it is the austarlian/british medical exam .

The curve is called SIGMOID curve .

Now if you multiply the score by say 4 so that the range fits our JEE MAINS range of 0 - 360 .

You will see that the curve is not so steep in range 75–90 ( for mains 300- 360).

Before that from 60–75 ( 240 - 300) the curve has f’’(x) < 0 (concave downwards ) that is possibly the reason why there is sudden decrease in percentiles for less change in marks .

After that till 50 ( 200 ) It is a straight line so not many in that region have complaints .

And its is an concave upwards function for about 45–49( 180–200) . So in this region people have a benefit in the percentile scores.
