Hello,
IIT Madras conducted the GATE-2019. The exam was held across at about 200 test centres. The mechanical paper was conducted in two sessions on 2nd February 2019 in the forenoon and afternoon sessions conducted from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM respectively.
For the forenoon session, reviews for the overall difficulty of the paper was easy to moderate and for the afternoon session, the difficulty level was stated as moderate to tough .
In the first shift of the exam, the general aptitude questions were easy and direct. In the technical part, the engineering maths section had 8 questions and from the rest, there were 26 questions from the Numerical Ability type which were a bit lengthy and evaluated the candidate's concept. Manufacturing and thermodynamics had high weightage with the application based questions while FM was on the easier side.
Each subject with its weightage:
General aptitude:10Q
Engineering mathematics:8Q
theory of machines and vibration:7Q
manufacturing:11Q
the strength of materials:7Q
fluid mechanics:6Q
thermodynamics and application:5-7Q
industrial engineering:2-4Q
heat transfer:2Q
machine design:2-3Q
engineering mechanics:1Q
The second shift of the exam had tricky and conceptual questions. The general aptitude section had a few difficult questions. In the technical part, the engineering maths comprised of 8 questions and from the technical part 32 questions were of Numerical Ability type of moderate difficulty level and were lengthy. Manufacturing and thermodynamics were the technical subjects with the highest weightage.
theory of machines and vibration:6Q
manufacturing:8Q
the strength of materials:6Q
fluid mechanics:3Q
thermodynamics and application:7Q
industrial engineering:4Q
heat transfer:4Q
machine design:5Q
engineering mechanics:4Q
However in the Normalisation process adopted in GATE, if one set is tougher compared to the other then some marks are added to the tougher set and meanwhile some marks deducted from the easier one. So with normalisation, there stands no partiality in the multiset exams.
Hope it helps. For any further queries, you can revert back here.
Good luck!
