Hi Surbhi

IPMAT is an aptitude entrance test  for integrated management programme conducted by IIM Indore. It is a computer mode based test conducted for a duration of 2 hours. The test emphasizes on mainly two important aspects, quantative ability which includes both multiple choice and short answer questions and verbal ability includes only multiple choice . No official syllabus is released by the institute. However on the basis on previous years examinations, one can roughly have an idea of the core topics that are covered in the examination pattern.

Now your query is regarding self preparation or coaching. If you analyse the syllabus pattern then you can easily deduce whether  or not your concepts are strong already or you need a fresh start.

Talking about the maths section, then topics from which questions are asked include:

Number System, Algebra, Set Theory, Data Interpretation, Geometry, Mensuration, Percentage, Profit and Loss, Time, Speed, Distance, Time and Work.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE:

  • Start chapter wise and segregate the chapters that are your strentgh and the ones in which you are weak.
  • Maths is all about working logically and for that having strong command on your concepts is important. So avoid cramming the methods by which some particular set of questions are solved as in IPMAT tricky questions come up frequently.
  • Learn formulas for mensuration by heart and most importantly practice questions in order to learn the applicability of your concepts.
  • In case you you are not good in maths or find it difficult to recall everything, then don't rely on books only and take proper coaching because you will be able to practice papers only after you are conceptually strong.

RECOMMENDED BOOKS:

  • The Pearson guide to IIM Indore- IIPM entrance examination book (The book has been developed on the basis of last three years' examination pattern and the scope of Aptitude Tests as conducted by IIM Indore.)
  • Mathematics book by R.S. Aggarwal
  • Recommended CBSE books from std. 6th to 12th as it is important to have strong base in them
  • Any competitive exam book or management entrance exams books  can help you to as quantitative aptitude is the main subject in all of them.

Coming up next on Verbal ability section, questions from below mentioned topics are repeatedly asked:

Paragraph Completion, Reading Comprehension, Word Jumble, Word Usage,  Vocabulary and Analogy, Para Jumble, Fill in the Blanks and Grammar.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR VERBAL ABILITY AND RECOMMENDED BOOKS:

  • Practice as many Comprehension passages as possible.
  • Practice objective type questions from every topic thoroughly.
  • Read editorial columns in newspapers like The Hindu, Economics Time or The Statesman.
  • Improve vocabulary and writing by regularly reading magazines like Business & Management Chronicle by Chronicle Publications and Competition Success Review .
  • GK and Current Affairs questions have been lately coming up since many years. So keep a track of all the updates.
  • Norman Lewis ' Word Power made Easy 'is an excellent book to improve vocabulary.
  • Pearson guide to IPMAT.

IMPORTANT TIPS AND GUIDELINES:

  • Prepare time table and divide equal time to both subjects. Finish topics one by one and keep revising them so that you don't forget.
  • Set weekly/ Daily targets to finish your syllabus on time.
  • Not only in concepts, but if you feel your sitting and concentration is not strong then you must take proper coaching. If you are good enough in academics and can devote serious time at home on your preparation then self study is sufficient.
  • Solve a lot of papers from books and and track the time in which you are able to finish your exam as time management is very important.
  • Take as many mock tests after full preparation and analyse your strenghts and weaknessess.
  • Note your mistakes and make sure you don't repeat them because negative marking can drop your score.
  • In the final exam, you should leave out the questions where you have doubts to avoid the negative marks.
  • Calculators are not allowed ,so don't use them in your preparation too.
  • Take note that the difficulty level just rose to a high level (relatively) last year and it'll go on increasing so prepare well.

Good Luck!

It is recommended that you start your preparation after 12th boards because they are equally important and you won't be able to concentrate fully in one area. You will have sufficient time after board exams and you will also be mentally relieved from the board stress!
