The Indian National Congress (INC) adopted the historic resolution ‘Purna swaraj’ or ‘total independence’ at its meeting in Lahore, on 19 December 1929. On 26 January 1930, the Congress Party issued a public statement declaring January 26, 1930 as ‘Independence Day’. At its meeting in Calcutta in 1906, led by Father Babaaji Naoroji the Congress had made Swaraj the ‘Goal of the Indian People’.
