Communication basically is the successful conveying or sharing of ideas and feelings. GD and PI, that is, Group discussion and Personal Interview requires the most of your communication skills.
A Group Discussion basically helps in problem solving , decision making and personality assessment. Whether one is a student, a job seeker ,a professional engineer or a company executive one needs effective GD skills.
A personal interview refers to an interview with someone from admissions from the college or university to which an individual has applied; this gives the interviewer a better idea of the student and his or her personality. It may also refer to a type of research in which the researcher meets individually with participants.
A candidate is judged on the basis of his/her performance.
The key to GD and PI is nothing but good or good communication skills and orating skills. Confidence is a sweet in a bowl sort of ritual for the same.
To begin with,besides being a good speaker you have to be an even better listener.
Try to be the first and the last one to speak.
Never lose your temper in between such conversations.
Prefer answers in statement rather than one word answers.
Always accept your mistakes. They only make you better.
Read magazines regularly with good contents and current affairs.
Watch good news channels including BBC London, Times Now.
Always think about the topic from 5 different perspectives : social, economical, political, legal, technical.
You must have a good gesture and a good body language. It says a lot about you.
You must have intonation in your voice and a good pitch.
Try to be a good leader and keep the leadership skill high.
Try to present a balanced view on the topic
Structure your thoughts first, and don’t start writing the moment you get the sheet.
Keep the language simple and don’t overuse words you don’t understand.
Be Concise.
Make sure you get your tenses right in the whole article.
Though all these things work on the practical basis, there should be a complete in-hand preparation.
Leadership quality is a must in group discussions and this will include Communication,Integrity,Accountability,Empathy,Humility,Resilience, Vision, Influence, Positivity and Delegation.
Intonation, that is, the rise and fall of the voice in speaking is a must in group discussion and personal interview.
Few things you must not risk during the GD and PI:
Do not Initiate the discussion if you do not have sufficient knowledge about the given topic.
Don’t Over speak, intervene and snatch other’s chances to speak.
Don’t Argue and shout during the GD.Don’t Look at the evaluators or a particular group member.
Don’t Talk irrelevant things and distract the discussion.
Don’t Pose negative body gestures like touching the nose, leaning back on the chair, knocking the table with a pen etc.
Don’t Mention erratic statistics.
Don’t Display low self confidence with a shaky voice and trembling hands.
Don’t Try to dominate the discussion
Don't Put others in an embarrassing situation by asking them to speak if they don’t want to.
