Hello A. Swathi,

You are thinking for a wonderful career choice as  Company Secretary is high in demand as a corporate professional. The need and the role of the company secretaries have been increased with the advent of the new Companies Act 2013. Company Secretary has been recognized as Key Managerial Personnel along with the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director, whole-time director and Chief Financial Officer.

The role itself has evolved from being more an inward-focused role, to becoming much more outward-looking. A Company Secretary r enders Corporate Governance and Secretarial services , something pivotal in the corporate sector today, and thus many job opportunities are available for qualifiled Company Secretaries.

A Company Secretary acts as a compliance officer for a company to ensure that all applicable laws and regulations are followed. He is also responsible for conducting board and shareholders meetings and also draft agreements on behalf of the company.

You should go for this professional course only if you have keen interest in studying corporate law. Though there are many subjects required to be studied by a CS Student including company laws, business laws, commercial laws, industrial laws, taxation, company accounts etc. but you should have good hold in theoretical learning and interest in legal research.

It is advisable that you do this course along side B.COM. as Company Secretary is a correspondence course in itself. You can complete B.Com. either from regular college or from open school. Go for Open school only if you are giving priority to your CS coaching classes. Most of the students opt  for correspondence course in B.Com and devote maximum time to CS classes. Examination  dates for both usually get clash but B.com. exams are always managable.

Following are the details to pursue CS course in India.

You need to clear all the papers of every stage to reach the next level. In Foundation Programme you need to appear for all four papers at once. Whereas in Executive and Professional  programme you can appear for examination either for all modules together or for a single module at one time. Admission fee is nominal and has to be paid once when enrolling for a particular programme but examination fee has to be paid everytime you appear/re-appear for your examination. Qualifying Marks:  A candidate is declared to have passed the Foundation/Executive/ Professional Programme, if he/she secures in one sitting atleast 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate of all subjects. After clearing the Professional Programme you have to go through 15 months management training in a Corporate or with a Practising Company Secretary Firm. Hello,

The Company Secretary is considered as one of the lucrative courses in India and if you like the idea of being a responsible top-level person who ensures that the company adheres to all the legalities and you are hard working then yes you should go for it because starting early can be beneficial. Though you can always skip the Foundation course if you decide to pursue it after graduation. If you start from now, you get the extra time to familiarise and make up your mind with less burden and you can work slowly and precisely towards achieving your goal.

Hope this answers your query, feel free to ask for more info.
