Hello,

There is no such restriction of belonging to specific stream when it comes to eligibility criteria for appearing in UPSC exam as it clearly states candidates need to pass bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized University, even final year students to are eligible to apply, the age limit is 21 to 32 years for general category, in case of reserved ones there is relaxation provided, now coming to your question the syllabus of UPSC tends to be more humanities oriented, but irrespective of this candidates from any background can qualify, if you see toppers from the last few years they come from engineering, medical, science, commerce etc, so you can go with any degree of your choice, if you're considering it as a back up plan then choose subjects as per your areas of interest, so in future you can also accordingly pursue higher education say if you have interest in research or teaching.
