Coming to your query scoring highest marks in one subject doesn't make you topper., For becoming topper in the examination you have to score highest marks in every board examination.

Particularly by getting highest marks in group subject is huge benefit for you in jee and other entrance examination.

Also you mentioned that you are writing improvement exam ,my suggestion write improvement exam for all the subjects in which you  got less than 75%.

see to become a topper only one subjects high score is not enough, you have to score decent score in all of the subjects. however if you appear in improvement exam and do well then you overall score will increase and which would add credits on your academic profile.
