Yes AIR and category rank are two different ranks, Suppose 100000 candidates appeared in JEE-Main 2021 and your AIR comes out to be 500 then it means that you are on 500th position out of those 100000 candidates but if we go towards category rank then suppose you belongs to OBC category and total 50000 OBC candidates appeared in JEE-Main and your OBC rank comes out to be 500 so it means that you are on 500th position out of those 50000 OBC candidates.
