Railway engineering can be classified in many ways:
Permanent way engineering
Branch of the railway engineering to develop, maintain and functioning of the permanent way, simply called the track development. This is one kind of basic branch of the railway engineering.
Signal and interlocking engineer
Signal and interlocking engineering as the name suggest deals with the signaling system of the railways, their maintenance, and developments. Similarly, interlocking is to develop the locking and assembling of the tracks.
Carriage and wagon engineer
Engineering branch of the railway engineering, that deals with the carriage and wagons like wheels, axles, SLR coaches, and locomotives.
Electrical and Train lighting engineer
The branch of the railway engineering which deals with the Electrical profile of the railways, either it may be station lighting or it may be a train-lighting.

Junior engineer is the common post inside the railways in various heads like Water treatment plant, Permanent way, Signals, and interlocking, etc.
The best opportunity an engineering graduate can get in Indian railways is through Indian Engineering services (IES).Every year an all India level examination(IES) is conducted in the month of june-july by UPSC.
RRB conducts exam for Section Engineer in different engineering branches, there's also Junior Engineer recruitment in various branch of engineering which takes place by RRB.
