Hi,
See, here’s the thing - if you belong to a category they tend to consider your category rank first, but there are some conditions. In every college there are certain number of seats reserved for each quota, and others for the open category students. Now if you apply through your quota, the college checks whether or not they have a vacancy in those reserved seats for your particular category. If there is no other candidate in your category who has a better rank than yours, then well and good you get the seat. If not, then they go for your CRL rank only.
Also if you have a good CRL rank, then you have an advantage, i.e. you won’t have to worried at all.
I hope that was helpful.
