Sir,Do we have to do dissections in M.B.B.S??Is that compulsory all?Kindly explain me about the whole learning years of M.B.B.S..please!
First MBBS is the only year you get to dissect a human body, and it is mandatory for all students. Don't be daunted by the thought of it, it is indeed one of the most teaching experiences you'd ever get. It seems strange, for about a day till you start enjoying it, mostly get used to it.
MBBS has four parts, instead of calling them years, we call them first MBBS, second MBBS and so on.
First MBBS has three nonclinical subjects
- Anatomy
- Physiology
- Biochemistry
Theory and practical of each subject has separate passing and dissection is included which comes under anatomy. First part is all about understanding the structure and normal working of human body.
Second MBBS has four paraclinical subjects
- Pathology
- Pharmacology
- Microbiology
- Forensic medicine and toxicology
We start dealing with what goes wrong with normal body and related subjects.
Also, clinical postings for Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics and Pediatrics also begin. So the time devoted to dissection in first MBBS now goes to postings. These are final year subjects. Here one has to go to wards and OPDs to learn the art of history taking, examination and differential diagnosis on patients. These postings continue till final year till one appears for them.
Third MBBS or minors have 3 clinical subjects
- Preventive and Social Medicine
- Ear Nose Throat
- Ophthalmology
Fourth/Final MBBS or majors have 4 clinical subjects
- Medicine
- Surgery
- Gynecology and Obstetrics
- Pediatrics
All subjects have their respective sub-topics like Orthopedics, Psychiatry, so on.
After final year, one had to intern in a hospital for a year.
HELLO
Yes, you do have a dissection in very first year of your MBBS.
My Experiances were really amazing
The first cut was frightening. Actually taking a knife and cutting into a human body is intimidating for the first time. The whole first day was a bit scary, as I recall.
After a few days, it became less intimidating and more instinctive. I no longer felt afraid, no longer worried irrationally about causing pain, and I was able to focus and use the cadaver to learn human anatomy.
All the Best.
Yes we have dissection in the first year, you need to perform dissection in order to learn anatomy else it will be very confusing. It's a good learning process and you may fear it in the beginning but you will get used to it.
For year has three subjects ,anatomy, Physiology and biochemistry.
Second year has pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and forensic
Third year has E.N.T, opthalmology and PSM.
Final year has surgery medicine, gynec obg and paeds. Surgery includes Orthopaedic as well
MBBS is an amazing experience and not everyone gets to experience it.
Goodluck.
I can totally relate to your notions. Most of the students before entering into medical college gets these thoughts but don't worry dissection isn't that filthy as it sounds but it's really interesting and if you ask me about the favourite part of my first year it's anatomy dissection for sure .
Still if you are feeling bad let me tell you that the professors and other staff will be very cooperative and will guide you throughout the process.
1st year : Anatomy ( internal structure and all )
Physiology ( about functional characteristics of body )
Biochemistry ( metabolism and all )
2nd year : pharmacology ( about drugs )
Pathology ( diseases )
Forensic medicine ( post mortem and medicolegal stuff )
Microbiology ( microbes , immunity etc. )
3rd year : ophthalmology (eyes and related disorders )
ENT (Ear , Nose , Throat )
Community medicine ( public health, social and preventive )
4th year : Medicine , surgery, pediatrics , Gynaecology
Then 1 year compulsory internship.
Good luck
Thanks
Second year subjects are pre-clinical, they'll include pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, forensic medicine and toxicology. You'll also be attending clinical postings at your hospitals from second year onwards where they'll teach you the basics of examining various organ systems In the human body.
This year and final year will comprise of clinical subjects.
Subjects of third year include community medicine, ophthalmology and ENT.
Final year is a conglomeration of subjects like medicine, surgery, orthopedics, gynecology, pediatrics, anesthesiology, radiology.
While the course is pretty much extensive, the learning experience is always worth all your time and efforts.
In my college, in the first yr we had daily dissection hall classes post lunch(not a very good time for some!). Since Anatomy deals with knowing each and every part of the human body and its structure in detail, it is essential to learn by performing dissections in the Dissection Hall.
Different colleges have different cadaver to student ratio. Cadaver is the dead preserved body that we perform the dissection on. So in my case we had 1 cadaver for 25 students, that means 4 cadavers for a total of 100 students.
It is important to pay attention to the teachers instructions in order to dissect properly and observe each and every layer of the body. It is a great learning experience and a perfect example of learning by doing.
Though it can be overwhelming for a newcomer to see a dead body lying in front of him/her with the added pungent smell of formalin but it is important to respect the body as it is from it that we all start our learning. Try to grab every opportunity of learning from it ,get your doubts cleared, read your daily topics regularly as anatomy is all about revising. Cunningham's manual of dissection is a great book but many people skip reading it. It gives a detailed step by step directions to dissect.
Coming to the second part of your question .
MBBS is a 5.5 yr course out of which 1 yr consists of compulsory rotatory internship in the various departments of the hospital but this is in the last 1 yr of MBBS.
The remaining 4.5 yrs are divided into 3 professional yrs:
1st Professional year: 1 yr long
Subjects: Anatomy, Physiology,Biochemistry
2nd Professional Year:1.5 yr long
Subjects: Pathology,Pharmacology,Microbiology , Forensic Medicine
3rd Professional yr is 2 yrs divided into 2 parts:
Part 1: 1 yr long
Subjects:Ophthalmology,ENT, Community Medicine
Part 2: 1 yr long
Subjects:Medicine,Surgery,Paediatrics,Obstetrics and Gynaecology
It is a long grilling journey with tests and exams throughout the course but in the end it polishes you to a very noble profession.
And the very thought of being able to give hope to a patient or his/her attendants can give you the strength to persevere and excel these yrs.
This is a basic outline of the course.Feel free to ask any more queries.
All the best!

Every student shall undergo a period of certified study extending over 4 academic years divided into 9 semesters, (i.e. of 6 months each) from the date of commencement of his study for the subjects comprising the medical curriculum to the date of completion of examination and followed by one year compulsory rotating internship
The period of 4 1//2 years is divided into 3 Phases as follows:
Phase-1 (two semesters) consisting of Pre-clinical subjects (Human Anatomy, Physiology including Bio-Physics, Biochemistry and introduction to Community Medicine
Phase-II (3 semester) consisting of para clinical/clinical subjects.
During this phase teaching of para-clinical and clinical subjects shall be done concurrently.
The para-clinical subjects shall consist of Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine including Toxicology and part of Community Medicine.
Phase-III(continuation of study of clinical subjects for seven semesters after passing Phase-1)
The clinical subjects to be taught during Phase II and III are Medicine and its allied specialties, Surgery and its allied specialties, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Community Medicine.
Besides clinical posting as per schedule mentioned herewith, rest of the teaching hours be divided for didactic lectures, demonstrations, seminars, group discussions, etc. in various subjects.
Internship- Internship is a phase of training wherein a graduate is expected to conduct actual practice of medical and health care and acquire skills under supervision so that he/she may become capable of functioning independently. Time allocation to each discipline is approximate and shall be guided more specifically by the actual experience obtained
Everyone has to do dissection in anatomy, then only it will be easy for you to understand the subject.
